Uneme Matsuri Festival will be held on Sep. 15th at Sarusawa-ike pond area in Nara city.

There is a small shrine called Uneme shrine beside Sarusawa-ike pond. This shrine pavilion is facing the inside which is uncommon in Japan. All the the other pavilions are faced outward.

Ancient story said that it was constructed to console the soul of Uneme who used to work for ancient emperor  and drowned herself in Sarusawa-ike pond because of her broken heart. But it was so hard for her soul in the shrine to look directly at the pond where she committed suicide. Then she turned around the pavilion one night.

This event has been held for the commemoration of her.

You can enjoy the parade of people in beautiful ancient clothes and the scenery of boats and paper lanterns.
